Wildfire Smoke Triggers Multistate Air Quality Alerts Across the US
4 Aug
Summary
- Millions urged to stay indoors due to thick smoky haze
- 12 states under orange air quality alerts, outdoor exercise discouraged
- Smoke from Canadian wildfires blowing across the border

On August 5th, 2025, a widespread air quality crisis has gripped large parts of the United States, with millions of residents urged to stay indoors and close their windows. The National Weather Service has placed 12 states across the Midwest and Northeast under orange air quality alerts, warning that the thick smoky haze could cause coughing, eye irritation, and breathing problems, especially for sensitive groups.
The alerts were triggered by wildfire smoke blowing across the border from Canada, which is currently experiencing its second-worst fire season on record. More than 4,000 blazes have been recorded so far, with around 700 still burning. In northern Wisconsin, a red alert has also been issued, with officials advising everyone to remain indoors as much as possible.
While the orange alerts primarily target vulnerable populations like young children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions, authorities have recommended that even healthy adults in the affected states consider limiting strenuous outdoor activities. The smoke can irritate the airways and increase the risk of serious health complications, including strokes and heart attacks.
The air quality crisis is expected to persist through the coming days, with officials warning the smoke may remain present through the end of the week. Residents are advised to closely monitor local air quality reports and take appropriate precautions to protect their health during this ongoing environmental emergency.
