Washington Floods Halt Ski Season Openings

Washington's ski season is off to a slow start as recent heavy rains and severe flooding have caused significant disruptions. Stevens Pass, a popular destination, experienced 17 inches of rainfall over a five-day period, leading to delays in its opening. While the resort itself reports being in good condition, surrounding communities are dealing with extensive flood damage.

The infrastructure connecting these areas has also been hit hard. US Highway 2, a crucial route for accessing western Washington, is closed indefinitely. A section of the highway washed out into the Wenatchee River, leaving the roadway impassable with rocks, trees, and mud. This closure impacts travel between Skykomish and Leavenworth.

Despite the current setbacks, there is optimism for the upcoming ski season. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Cascades, with predictions of one and a half to three feet of snow and strong winds. This forecast offers hope for snow accumulation, provided that road access can be safely restored and weather conditions permit.
