16 Mar
Summary
- Upper Chamoli district received heavy snowfall since Sunday night.
- Badrinath and Kedarnath temples are covered in thick snow layers.
- Kedarnath temple is set to reopen for pilgrims on April 22, 2026.

As North India transitions to warmer weather, the high Himalayan region of Uttarakhand is still experiencing significant winter conditions. Heavy snowfall began Sunday night in the upper reaches of Chamoli district, covering the sacred town of Badrinath and surrounding mountain peaks in thick snow. This has caused temperatures to drop sharply, bringing back severe cold to Badrinath and nearby lower regions.
Similar extreme weather was recently noted in Kedarnath, Rudraprayag district, on January 28, with three to four feet of snow reported. Security personnel from Rudraprayag Police and ITBP maintained patrols despite frigid temperatures. Preparations are actively progressing for the reopening of the Kedarnath temple, scheduled for April 22, 2026, at 8:00 AM, following traditional Panchang calculations.
