Banda Burns: India's Hottest City Swelters Above 47°C!
26 Apr
Summary
- Banda recorded a scorching 47.4°C, equaling its April record since 1951.
- Uttar Pradesh has 14 cities under heatwave or severe heatwave conditions.
- A western disturbance may bring relief by Tuesday, dropping temperatures.

Scorching heat gripped Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, with Banda recording a blistering 47.4 degrees Celsius, equalling its highest April temperature since 1951. This intense heatwave, affecting 40 cities nationwide, with 14 in Uttar Pradesh, shows no immediate signs of easing. Authorities predict continued heatwave and dry, hot winds across most of eastern and parts of western Uttar Pradesh through Monday.
Lucknow also experienced its hottest day of the season, with temperatures reaching 42.9 degrees Celsius. The city's mercury levels have been climbing steadily, with further increases expected on Sunday. Other severely affected cities include Prayagraj, Varanasi, Jhansi, and Agra, all experiencing temperatures above 44 degrees Celsius.
Experts attribute the persistent heat to clear skies, hot winds from Rajasthan's desert region, and an anticyclone over Maharashtra hindering cloud development. Relief may finally arrive by Tuesday when a western disturbance is expected to approach, potentially bringing light rainfall to western Uttar Pradesh and causing temperatures to drop by 3-5 degrees Celsius.
