Upstate New York Braces for Overnight Frost and Freezing Temperatures
1 Oct
Summary
- Frost Advisories issued for Southern Herkimer, Southern Oneida, and Madison counties
- Temperatures expected to drop into the low 30s and high 20s overnight
- Residents advised to cover or bring in sensitive outdoor plants to prevent damage

On the evening of October 2, 2025, the National Weather Service Binghamton Field Office issued Frost Advisories for several counties in Upstate New York's Mohawk Valley region. The advisories, which are in effect from 12:38 am through 8 am on October 2, cover Southern Herkimer, Southern Oneida, and Madison counties.
According to NWS Meteorologist Bryan Greenblatt, temperatures in Southern Oneida County are expected to drop into the low 30-degree range overnight, potentially leading to widespread frost formation. Northern Oneida County is also under a Freeze Warning, with temperatures likely to dip into the high 20s.
Greenblatt emphasized that the "sheltered valleys" in the affected areas will see the most significant frost accumulation. As a result, residents are being advised to either cover or bring inside any sensitive outdoor plants to prevent them from being damaged or killed by the freezing temperatures.
The Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings are only issued during the active growing season, which is set to end in Oneida and Madison counties on October 11. In Northern Herkimer County, where the growing season concludes on October 1, the NWS will no longer issue cold temperature alerts for the remainder of the winter.
"These alerts are especially for farmers," Greenblatt said, "but we want to make sure the general public is aware so they can protect their outdoor plants."
