UP Swelters: Monsoon Relief Still Days Away
18 Jun
Summary
- Uttar Pradesh faces prolonged heatwave with temperatures over 40°C.
- Monsoon advancement into the state is unlikely for four to five days.
- Isolated thunderstorms may offer temporary, localized relief.

Uttar Pradesh is currently under the grip of a severe heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in numerous districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that conditions are unfavorable for the southwest monsoon to advance into the state, prolonging the wait for much-needed relief. This delay is attributed to the absence of any significant weather system that could propel the monsoon northward.
Residents in Lucknow, Noida, and Amethi, among other areas, are advised to brace for continued high temperatures. While isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall may occur due to local weather activity, these are not expected to bring lasting relief. The IMD suggests that these conditions will persist for at least the next four to five days. Heatwave conditions might reappear after June 19 in some pockets as temperatures rise again.
Parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Prayagraj and Banda, have recorded some of the highest temperatures in the country, reaching 44°C and 43.4°C respectively. Meteorologists note that increased daytime heating, due to a lack of widespread cloud cover, is exacerbating the heat. There is a possibility of increased rainfall activity in northern Uttar Pradesh, particularly the Terai belt, after five to six days, but the actual monsoon arrival remains uncertain.
