This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Atlantic has seen at least one Category 5 hurricane, a concerning trend of increasingly extreme weather. Prior to this recent spate, the last time the Atlantic saw three or more Category 5 storms in a single season was the record-breaking 2005, which saw four such hurricanes - Emily, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.
Hurricanes reaching Category 5 status, with maximum sustained winds of 157 mph or higher, are the most powerful on the Saffir-Simpson scale. They pose an extreme threat to life and property, and their frequency in recent years is a worrying sign of the impacts of climate change on Atlantic storm activity.
