Autumn Downpours to Soak UK: Flood Alerts Issued
14 Sep
Summary
- Unsettled Atlantic weather brings autumnal downpours and strong winds to the UK.
- Flood alerts issued for several areas due to expected heavy rain and high tides.
- Temperatures could reach 25C in the south despite the wet start to the week.
The UK is preparing for a return to unsettled Atlantic weather beginning on Monday, characterized by autumnal downpours and strong winds. These conditions are expected to be most severe in the north of England and across most of Scotland, with rain forecast for nearly all of Scotland and parts of northern England.
Over 30 areas are anticipating heavy rain, prompting the issuance of flood alerts for locations such as the Tidal River Avon, the Somerset coast at Porlock Weir, and the tidal River Waveney. These warnings are linked to expected high tides.
Despite the wet forecast for the start of the week, there is potential for warmer temperatures, possibly reaching 25C in London and 22C in Manchester, before the unsettled weather returns. This residual warmth may offer a brief period of summer-like conditions before the autumn pattern fully establishes itself.
This period of unsettled weather follows a summer with five heatwaves that contributed to drought conditions across much of the country. While official heatwave criteria require consecutive days above specific temperature thresholds (25C in Scotland/NI, 28C in London), the upcoming warm spells are unlikely to meet these conditions.
