UK Brace for 90mph Easter Winds
1 Apr
Summary
- Yellow weather warning issued for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern areas.
- Gusts up to 90mph expected, potentially disrupting travel and power.
- Cold air plunge from Canada fuels significant low-pressure system.

The northern half of the UK is bracing for severe weather this Easter weekend, as meteorologists have issued a yellow weather warning for very strong winds.
Forecasters predict gusts of 50-60mph widely, with exposed locations potentially experiencing 60-70mph, and western Scotland facing as high as 80-90mph. This is attributed to a significant cold air plunge from Canada strengthening the jet stream and spawning a deep low-pressure system.
Commuters and travelers should anticipate delays and possible cancellations across road, rail, air, and ferry services. High-sided vehicles on exposed routes are particularly at risk, with potential closures of some roads and bridges.
Beyond travel, the strong winds pose a risk of power cuts, disruption to mobile phone services, and damage to buildings. Coastal areas might also see injuries from large waves and beach material being thrown inland.
The warning is in effect from 6pm on Saturday until midday on Sunday, with winds expected to ease gradually on Easter Sunday as the low-pressure system moves away.
