UK Braces for -5C Freeze and Snow Showers
3 Mar
Summary
- Temperatures will plummet to -5C with overnight frosts expected.
- Snow flurries are possible in northern areas and higher elevations.
- Sunny intervals forecast for the south, but nights will remain cold.

The UK is set to experience a sharp cold snap, with temperatures forecast to drop as low as -5C in some areas starting March 6. Meteorologists predict biting overnight frosts and wintry conditions across the country.
Weather maps indicate frigid air sweeping in, bringing the possibility of snow flurries, particularly to Scotland and northern England. These regions are braced for the most severe temperatures, with cloudless skies allowing mercury to plummet after dark. Snow is expected to peak on the night of Sunday, March 8, with settling snow concentrated in eastern and central Scotland.
Wintry weather is also predicted to extend into northern England, with Northumberland, Cumbria, and the Pennines likely to see sleet and wet snow. Sections of East Anglia, including Norwich and Ipswich, could also experience snow showers as arctic air circulates.
However, high pressure is expected to dominate southern and south-eastern England from March 6 to March 15, promising mostly dry weather with sunny intervals. Despite these drier conditions, clear skies and gentle breezes will cause temperatures to plummet after sunset, leading to widespread patchy frost and potential freezing fog in spots.
Periodic weather fronts may affect the northern and western parts of the UK, bringing rainfall and blustery conditions, with the possibility of hill snow in Scotland and northern England. While daytime temperatures might hover around seasonal norms, overnight temperatures are predicted to fall well below freezing in rural areas.
