Thunderstorms Unleash 60 MPH Winds and Hail

Thunderstorms have begun to impact the UK, bringing risks of sudden, gusty winds reaching up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, hail, and heavy rain. These storms pose additional hazards, with impacts more probable along the south coast of Devon and Cornwall.

Authorities advise gathering essential supplies like torches and power packs in case of power outages. It is recommended to seek shelter but to avoid underground or low-lying areas susceptible to rapid flooding. Lightning can strike miles away from the storm's center.

People are cautioned to stay clear of objects that conduct electricity, such as umbrellas, bicycles, and metal poles in tents. In exposed locations, a specific low squatting position is advised if hair stands on end, emphasizing not to lie flat.

Drivers should remain in their vehicles with windows wound up during storms. This follows a period where Somerset recorded approximately 18,540 lightning strikes in 24 hours, and London experienced around 400 calls related to storms, including house fires and flooding.

The UK recently experienced its hottest June day, with temperatures soaring to 35.8C in West Sussex. A red warning for extreme heat remains active across large parts of England and Wales until Thursday evening.
