UK Faces Snow Chaos: Amber Alerts Issued
1 Jan
Summary
- Amber snow warnings issued for Scottish Highlands and north-east.
- Disruptive snow, ice, and strong winds expected across the UK.
- Health alerts warn of increased deaths in vulnerable groups.

Scotland is bracing for significant disruption as amber warnings for heavy snow showers are in effect for parts of the Highlands and north-east from midday Friday to midday Saturday. Accumulations of 10-20cm are expected at low levels, with up to 40cm possible on higher ground, potentially leading to blizzard conditions due to strong winds.
Across the rest of the UK, yellow warnings for snow and ice cover large parts of England and Wales on Friday, with potential for up to 5cm of snow, especially on higher ground. Northern Ireland also faces similar warnings. Authorities are urging preparedness for longer journey times and cautioning against slips and falls on icy surfaces.
The cold spell is predicted to persist into next week, with temperatures remaining well below average. The UK Health Security Agency has upgraded cold health alerts to amber across most of England, including London, citing significant impacts on health services and a potential rise in deaths among the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.
