Rare Amber Alerts for Snow Threaten UK Power
1 Jan
Summary
- Amber warnings for snow and ice issued by the Met Office.
- Arctic air causes prolonged spell of very cold weather.
- Rural communities could be cut off by power cuts and service disruptions.

The UK is bracing for a severe cold snap as the Met Office has issued rare amber warnings for snow and ice, effective from midday on Friday, January 2, for 24 hours. This alert covers parts of northern and eastern Scotland, signalling a significant threat to power supplies for numerous communities.
Arctic air is set to cause a prolonged period of very cold weather to start the New Year, with temperatures expected to fall significantly below average. Widespread frost and ice are anticipated, alongside an increasing risk of snow showers across the nation.
These amber warnings suggest a substantial chance that remote areas could experience complete isolation due to power outages and disruptions to essential services, including mobile phone coverage. Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong noted that sub-zero overnight temperatures and daytime highs struggling to exceed 0°C are expected for many.
