Brace for a significant winter event as a 500-mile wall of snow is projected to extend across much of the UK. This wintry phenomenon is expected to last for approximately eight hours, beginning on March 1st and continuing into March 2nd. Reports indicate that around 31 cities could see snow blanket their streets. Cities such as Birmingham, Edinburgh, Derry, and Bangor are anticipated to experience these conditions between 6pm on March 1st and midnight on March 2nd.
WXCharts data forecasts substantial snowfall in the Grampians, with estimates ranging from 45cm to 67cm. Central Scotland may receive between 1cm and 14cm of snow. Temperatures are set to plummet drastically, with central Scotland potentially reaching -8C. Other areas of the UK can expect lows between 0C and -3C, with Northern Ireland experiencing similar conditions. Northern England's temperatures are predicted to be between 4C and -1C, while the Midlands will see between 2C and 4C. Southern England is forecast to have temperatures ranging from 0C to 3C.
Met Office forecasters anticipate a period dominated by Atlantic low-pressure systems, bringing showers, rain, and occasional strong winds. Snowfall is probable, primarily on high ground in the north. While temperatures may fluctuate, some periods are expected to be colder than average, especially in the north. Interludes of drier weather are also likely between these systems. The Met Office has already issued yellow warnings for snow and ice covering northern Scotland from 3pm on February 17th, 2026, until 10am on February 18th, 2026, with potential accumulations of 1-2cm at low levels and 2-5cm above 150m.
