UK Seaside Towns Enjoy Booming August as Mediterranean Heatwaves Fuel Staycations
9 Oct
Summary
- Records broken for June 2025 temperatures in Portugal and Spain
- Wildfires rage across Mediterranean due to heatwaves
- UK seaside town of St Annes sees biggest rise in visitors

According to data experts, the UK's seaside towns experienced a booming August in 2025 as a result of the intense heatwaves across the Mediterranean region. Temperatures in parts of Southern Europe reached record highs in June, with Portugal and Spain both surpassing 46°C (115°F). At least 10 other countries in the region also broke their own temperature records.
The scorching summer conditions also led to numerous wildfires across the Mediterranean, causing further damage to ecosystems, property, and air quality. In the face of these challenges, many holidaymakers appear to have opted for staycations in the UK instead of traveling abroad.
The UK seaside town that saw the biggest rise in visitors was St Annes, near Blackpool in Lancashire. St Annes boasts trendy boutiques, a wide sandy beach, a Victorian pier, plush hotels, and modern beach huts - making it an attractive destination for those seeking a British coastal getaway.
