The UKHSA anticipates that 2026 may see the highest number of heat-associated deaths on record, with definitive figures expected in early 2027. These statistics underscore the increasing risk as the climate warms, leading to longer, more frequent, and extreme hot weather events.
Compounding the heat crisis, drought conditions were declared across more than half of England in late July 2026. The Environment Agency stated that water is being used faster than it can be replenished. This extreme weather has placed a serious strain on public health and the National Health Service, with health officials expressing gratitude to frontline workers.
