18 Jun
Summary
- Amber heat health alerts are active across England until Tuesday.
- Temperatures expected to reach 33C early next week.
- Older adults and those with chronic illnesses are most vulnerable.

England is currently under an amber heat health alert as the nation braces for a significant heatwave expected this weekend and into early next week. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued warnings, anticipating temperatures that could reach 33C, posing a considerable risk to public health and strain on care services.
The amber alert is in effect from Thursday midday until Tuesday evening, covering large parts of England. Temperatures are projected to exceed 30C by Friday and soar higher over the weekend, with projections of 32C on Sunday and 33C on Monday. This alert system is designed to notify healthcare providers and other sectors of potential health impacts.
Certain groups are identified as most vulnerable to the extreme heat. This includes older individuals, particularly women over 75, those living alone or in care facilities, and people with chronic health conditions like heart or lung disease, diabetes, or certain mental health issues. Babies, young children, and those dependent on alcohol or drugs are also at higher risk.
To mitigate risks, the public is advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure between 11am and 3pm, wear light clothing, and protect themselves with sunscreen and hats. Keeping homes cool by managing window ventilation and using fans (if temperatures are below 35C) is also recommended. Recognizing signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness and headache, is crucial, as it can escalate to life-threatening heatstroke if not addressed promptly.
