According to the latest weather forecasts, the UK is bracing for a significant shift in weather conditions next week as a blast of Arctic air sweeps across the country. The Met Office predicts that high pressure will move southward towards the Azores, drawing in frigid northerly winds that will cause temperatures to tumble.
As this cold air spreads southward, the Met Office warns that there is a "reasonable" chance of snow, particularly in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and possibly North Wales. Temperatures are expected to fall several degrees below seasonal norms, with overnight lows of -2°C in the North West of England on Tuesday and between 0°C and 2°C across central England and Scotland on Wednesday.
By the end of next week, the Met Office says a "widespread wintry spell" could reach the UK, with even southern areas of the country potentially seeing snowfall. According to forecast site OpenWeather, the snow could arrive as early as Monday in parts of Scotland and the North East, before spreading to Wales and potentially Gloucestershire in the South West by Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Met Office has stated that the probability of snow will increase as the week progresses, and there is a growing chance of sleet and snow, particularly over hills and mountains. The forecaster has also warned of the risk of ice, especially where rain falls onto cold surfaces.
