Tropical Storm Erin Brings Potential Thunderstorms and High Winds to UK
14 Aug
Summary
- Tropical Storm Erin sweeps across Cape Verde, killing 9 and forcing 1,500 to evacuate
- Met Office warns of increased wind and rain, possibly thundery, in UK from August 19-28
- Forecasters say Erin's path could influence UK weather, with potential for wet and windy conditions

According to the latest forecasts, the UK could be in for some unseasonable weather in the coming weeks due to the influence of Tropical Storm Erin, which has been sweeping across the Atlantic.
Just last month, Erin caused a state of emergency to be declared in the Cape Verde islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão after nine people were killed and around 1,500 forced to evacuate their homes. Now, the storm is making its way westward, with the potential to reach the Leeward Islands, Bermuda, or the east coast of the US.
The Met Office has warned that Erin's progression could have a significant impact on weather conditions in the UK between August 19 and 28. During this period, there is an increased likelihood of stronger winds and rain, some of which could be heavy and thundery, especially in southern and western areas. However, temperatures are expected to remain above average, with the potential for further hot spells, particularly in the south.
The forecasters have emphasized the uncertainty surrounding Erin's eventual path and its influence on the UK's weather. They note that tropical systems at this time of year can sometimes be picked up by the jet stream, leading to wet and windy conditions or, in some cases, warmer weather if the system remains offshore.
