Bertha Bears Down: Gulf Coast Braces for Storm Surge

Tropical Storm Bertha has intensified in the Gulf of Mexico and is currently tracking toward the Florida Panhandle and Alabama as of Tuesday morning. The storm is located approximately 110 miles south of Panama City, Florida, moving northwest at 5 mph with sustained winds of 50 mph, an increase from its formation on Monday night.

A tropical storm warning is active from the Florida-Alabama border to Louisiana, indicating expected conditions within 36 hours. Additionally, a storm surge watch has been issued from the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi River, warning of potentially life-threatening water moving inland within 48 hours.

Bertha, the second tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is forecast to drop heavy rain across coastal areas of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, with potential accumulations of 3 to 5 inches along the Louisiana coast. The storm may also produce isolated tornadoes over Florida's Big Bend region and cause flash flooding through Friday along the coast extending to middle Texas.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Fausto is active in the eastern Pacific, far from Mexico's Baja California peninsula. While Fausto poses no direct threat to land, it is strengthening with top sustained winds of 80 mph and could cause dangerous surf and rip tide conditions along the Baja California coast.
