A tornado warning has been issued for southwest Michigan as a severe thunderstorm threatens the region. The National Weather Service reported that the storm, capable of producing a tornado, is traveling northeast from the Battle Creek vicinity at approximately 55 mph.
This dangerous weather system is expected to impact rural areas of east central Kalamazoo County and northern Calhoun County before the warning expires at 8:15 p.m. Residents face potential hazards including dangerous flying debris, destruction of mobile homes, and damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles. Tree damage is also anticipated, with wind gusts potentially reaching 70 mph.
Authorities are advising residents to move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a secure structure immediately. Furthermore, nine counties across southwest Michigan are currently under a tornado watch, which remains in effect until 11 p.m.
