Thunderstorms and Showers Disrupt England's Heatwave Relief
13 Aug
Summary
- Heat health alerts extended in England until August 18
- Thunderstorms and heavy rain hit parts of the country
- Firefighters battle major moor fire in North Yorkshire

As of August 13, 2025, England is still reeling from the impacts of its fourth heatwave this summer. The UK Health Security Agency has extended yellow weather warnings for several regions, including Yorkshire and Humber, the Midlands, London, and the South, until August 18. This means significant health and social care impacts are possible due to the high temperatures, including a potential rise in deaths among the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.
The respite from the heatwave has been short-lived, as thunderstorms and heavy rain have hit parts of the country, including London and Kent. The Met Office has also issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for most of Scotland, with the potential for up to 30mm of rain in less than an hour and 50mm locally, as well as hail and gusty winds.
The heatwave has also taken a toll on the environment and agriculture, with officials reporting "nationally significant" water shortages in England. This has led to reduced crop yields, a lack of feed for livestock, and an increase in wildfires, including a major incident declared in North Yorkshire, where a moor fire near an RAF base has spread over five square kilometers.

Despite the challenges, the weather is expected to improve in the coming days, with the South East set to enjoy sunshine and temperatures of up to 31°C on Friday, and the weekend expected to be dry and sunny for most parts of the UK.
