Texas Heatwave Breaks, Cold Front Returns
23 Mar
Summary
- Texas faces unseasonably hot weather with highs in the 90s.
- A cold front is expected to bring cooler temperatures by the weekend.
- Fire danger is high due to low humidity and breezy winds.

Texas residents are experiencing unseasonably hot weather this week, with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s and lower 90s in areas like San Antonio and Austin. Overnight lows are anticipated to remain in the mid-60s. This warmth is short-lived, however, as a significant cold front is forecast to cross South Central Texas between Friday and Saturday.
The arrival of the cold front will bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, with highs expected to be in the upper 70s and lows in the upper 50s for the weekend. Prior to this shift, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Fire Danger Statement for the San Antonio-Austin region, effective Sunday, March 22, from noon to 8 p.m. This warning is due to near-critical fire weather conditions fueled by low humidity and gusty south winds.
In North Texas, the hottest day of the current heatwave was Sunday, March 22, with widespread temperatures reaching the 90s. A cold front is projected to arrive by Monday, ushering in cooler air. However, a subsequent warming trend is set to begin on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to return to the 90s by the middle of the week, according to the NWS.
