Texas Panhandle Braces for Hail, 60 MPH Winds

Parts of the Texas Panhandle are preparing for inclement weather, including the possibility of penny-sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. These conditions are anticipated as a weak cold front moves into the region.

The National Weather Service in Amarillo has indicated that strong winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall will be the main concerns. A low tornado risk has also been noted for the northeastern Panhandles.

The forecast places the northeastern Panhandles under a Level 1 of 5 severe thunderstorm risk, the lowest on the scale, with the primary window for these storms being Wednesday afternoon into the evening.

Rainfall chances are more widespread, with most of the northern Panhandles and the far southeastern Texas Panhandle having a 20 to 40 percent chance of precipitation. The southern Texas Panhandle could see even higher rain chances, between 40 and 60 percent.

This storm threat follows a period of above-average temperatures, with near-record highs expected prior to the frontal passage. Models suggest that weak wind shear and disorganized storms are likely, with localized heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts as the primary hazards.
