Texans Urged to Curb Pollution as Air Quality Alerts Issued
26 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Millions of Texans advised to reduce pollution on Friday
- Air quality alerts issued for Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston areas
- Smoke from regional wildfires also causing poor air quality in Washington state
As of September 26th, 2025, millions of Texans were advised to take measures to curb pollution on Friday, as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued air quality alerts for the Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston, Galveston, and Brazoria areas. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cautions that people with asthma, children, older adults, and those active outdoors are most at risk from breathing air containing high levels of ozone, which can cause coughing, breathing difficulties, and airway inflammation.
The NWS alerts stated that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality had declared an ozone action day for the Houston, Galveston, and surrounding areas, with atmospheric conditions expected to be conducive to high ozone pollution. A similar alert was also in effect for the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Residents in the affected areas were urged to help reduce pollution by carpooling, walking, avoiding drive-through lanes, and conserving energy.
Separately, an air quality alert was also in force in Washington state due to smoke from regional wildfires, including the Lower Sugarloaf and Labor Mountain fires. The alert warned that particulate matter levels were expected to be unhealthy, prompting recommendations for people to limit time outdoors and avoid strenuous activity.
