On Thursday, Tamil Nadu experienced intense summer heat as citizens turned out in large numbers to vote, achieving an 85% voter turnout. Sweltering conditions were prevalent across the state, particularly in interior regions where temperatures soared significantly above normal.
Vellore was recorded as the hottest location, with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) reporting a maximum temperature of 40.7°C. Karur Paramathi and Madurai Airport also reached 40.0°C. Several other cities and districts recorded temperatures above 38°C, indicating widespread heatwave-like conditions.
Coastal areas reported relatively cooler temperatures compared to the interior, with Chennai Airport at 37.5°C. Hill stations offered respite, with Udagamandalam at 27.2°C and Kodaikanal being the coolest at 21.8°C. Rainfall was limited to isolated showers in southern districts, with Thangachimadam recording 17.6 mm.
The RMC indicated that maximum temperatures were 2-3°C above normal in many interior districts. Looking ahead, the forecast for April 24-27 suggests continued heat, with only isolated light to moderate rainfall expected in the Western Ghats and southern coastal districts. Most of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal will likely remain dry.
