Super El Nino: Winter Snow Warning Issued Early

Forecasters anticipate a Super El Nino forming by the end of 2026, a pattern historically linked to substantial snowfall in mountainous regions. This phenomenon, characterized by sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific exceeding normal by over two degrees Celsius, is already showing early signs of development. The expected pattern favors milder conditions across the northern U.S. but wetter conditions in the South.

Four states are particularly bracing for increased precipitation and significant snow: California in the Sierra Nevada, and the Northeast states of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center also forecasts above-normal precipitation for the Gulf States and parts of the Southeast to Mid-Atlantic. This translates to deep snow potential in the Sierra Nevada and heavy winter conditions for the Northeast.

Drivers are strongly advised to prepare for winter conditions starting now, six months before the season typically begins. August is highlighted as an opportune time for purchasing winter tires and equipment, as retailers offer their quietest promotions and availability is highest. Scheduling pre-winter vehicle checkups for October is also recommended to ensure critical components like batteries, coolant, and wipers are in good condition before the first freeze.

Essential winter gear includes winter tires, snow chains, and a trunk kit containing items like a scraper, shovel, traction aids, jumper cables, and a blanket. Beyond equipment, developing essential winter driving skills, such as proper braking and steering techniques, is crucial.
