Sudden Downpour Disrupts Delhi, Brings Relief from Scorching Heat
30 Sep
Summary
- Heavy rain disrupts flights, traffic, and festival preparations
- Maximum temperature drops 3°C below previous day, minimum 5°C below normal
- Delhi records second lowest monthly average minimum temperature since 2018

On October 1, 2025, Delhi experienced a sudden and intense spell of heavy rain that caused significant disruptions across the city. The downpour led to the diversion of five flights to Jaipur between 12:15 and 12:30 pm due to adverse weather conditions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Traffic also slowed down considerably, and waterlogging was reported in several areas, including Zakhira Railway underpass, ITO, Vikas Marg, Minto Road underpass, and Mayur Vihar.
The heavy rain, however, brought a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat that had gripped the city in recent days. The maximum temperature on October 1 settled at 34.2°C, three degrees below the previous day's figure, while the minimum temperature was 28.7°C, five degrees below normal. Overall, Delhi recorded the second lowest monthly average minimum temperature (24.6°C) in September 2025 since 2018.
The sudden downpour was attributed to the presence of an intense low-pressure area over the Gulf of Kutch and the formation of two troughs that facilitated the moisture supply from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for the capital, warning of moderate rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds.
The rain and the shift in wind direction are expected to provide some relief to Delhi's air quality, which had been in the "moderate" category for nearly three weeks. The city's Air Quality Index (AQI) on October 1 was 117, a marginal dip from the previous day's 120.
