18 Aug
Summary
- NOAA and Air Force hurricane hunters capture footage inside Erin's eye
- Erin remains a "large and dangerous major hurricane" through mid-week
- Dare County, NC issues state of emergency and mandatory evacuation

As of August 18, 2025, Hurricane Erin continues to churn in the Atlantic Ocean, bringing life-threatening surf and rip currents to the Bahamas, the east coast of the United States, Bermuda, and Atlantic Canada. According to the National Hurricane Center, Erin is currently a Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 130 mph and higher gusts.
Remarkably, NOAA and Air Force hurricane hunters have captured stunning aerial footage from inside the eye of this powerful storm. The hurricane center warns that Erin is expected to remain a "large and dangerous major hurricane" through the middle of this week, even with some weakening forecast to begin on Monday night.
In response to the threat, officials in Dare County, North Carolina, have declared a state of emergency and issued a mandatory evacuation for Hatteras Island. They warn that coastal flooding and ocean overwash are expected to begin as early as Tuesday and continue through Thursday, likely rendering portions of NC Highway 12 impassable for several days.
