Severe Weather Alerts Issued for Northern India Amid Monsoon Fury
6 Aug
Summary
- IMD forecasts thunderstorms, heavy rains, and strong winds in Punjab and Haryana
- Potential impacts include waterlogging, crop damage, and power/water supply disruptions
- Broader weather alert predicts heavy rainfall across the region from August 4-6

As of August 6, 2025, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts for northern India, warning of intense monsoon activity in the coming days.
Earlier this week, on August 4, the IMD's Chandigarh Meteorological Centre issued a broader weather alert predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from August 4 to August 6. The department warned of potential impacts including waterlogging in low-lying areas, damage to standing or harvested crops, disruptions to power and water supply, and a rise in water levels in seasonal rivers and drains.
More recently, on the morning of August 6, the IMD issued a tehsil-level nowcast for parts of Punjab and Haryana, forecasting moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. The alert, valid until 10:14 am, warns of strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h and potential impacts like waterlogging and crop damage.
In Punjab, thunderstorm activity along with moderate rainfall is expected in several tehsils, including Kharar, Rupnagar, and Anandpur Sahib. Light to moderate rainfall may also occur across a wider region of the state. Similarly, in Haryana, areas such as Jagadhri, Panchkula, and Kalka are likely to experience moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The IMD has urged residents to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions and advised caution during outdoor activities, especially in storm-prone or low-lying areas. With the monsoon intensifying, the coming days are expected to bring significant rainfall and potential disruptions across northern India.
