Residents of Serbian mountain villages were met with an unexpected early winter spell just prior to the end of September. While lower-lying areas continued to experience high temperatures, villages on Golija reported heavy and dense snowfall. Despite the intensity, the snow did not form a cover, melting upon contact with the warm soil.
Mountain inhabitants are accustomed to long, cold winters, but snow in September always causes surprise. Older residents recall snow occurring on Golija in nearly every month except July over past decades. Similar early snowfall was also observed on Kopaonik, where temperatures dropped to around zero degrees Celsius. Strong northerly winds accompanied the snow, leading to immediate traffic slowdowns in the mountain resorts.
