Flooding fears grip Scotland as Storm Austen hits
21 Oct
Summary
- Heavy rain expected across southern and central Scotland.
- Up to 80mm of rain could fall in some locations.
- Travel disruption and potential power cuts are likely.

Storm Austen is forecast to bring heavy rain to southern and central Scotland before dawn on Friday, extending into northeast Scotland by the afternoon. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning, predicting widespread accumulations of 20-40 mm, with some areas potentially receiving 60-80 mm.
This significant rainfall is expected to cause flooding and considerable travel disruption, including potential delays or cancellations to train and bus services. Motorists should anticipate difficult driving conditions due to spray and flooding, with some road closures possible and a small chance of communities becoming isolated.
Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor road conditions and public transport schedules, and to be prepared to alter travel plans. The Met Office also recommends having a flood plan and an emergency kit, including torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack, in case of power outages.
