Southern and south-west Scotland are bracing for exceptionally heavy rainfall this weekend, prompting the Met Office to issue an amber weather warning. From Saturday midnight until Sunday 11:59 PM, areas including Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway, South Lanarkshire, and the Scottish Borders will experience persistent downpours, with some higher elevations potentially receiving up to 130mm.
Forecasters warn of significant risks to life due to deep floodwaters and strong winds, alongside disruption to homes, businesses, and transportation networks. Many communities could become cut off by inundated roads, necessitating caution for all travel. Yellow weather warnings are also in effect across western Scotland, indicating further potential for travel difficulties, power outages, and localized flooding.
The severe weather is already impacting public transport, with ScotRail cancelling services between Kilmarnock and Dumfries and imposing speed restrictions on several lines. Ferry operations are also subject to delays and cancellations. These conditions follow closely on the heels of Storm Bram, which recently brought high winds and rain to the region.
