Sanya Shuts Down as Typhoon Kajiki Barrels Toward Southern China

As of August 24th, 2025, Typhoon Kajiki is rapidly approaching the southern coast of China, with forecasters predicting it will strengthen significantly. The storm, currently located about 200 km southeast of Sanya on the island province of Hainan, is expected to pack maximum sustained winds of up to 48 m/s as it moves northwest at around 20 km/h.

In response to the impending threat, the city of Sanya, renowned for its seafront resorts and sandy beaches, has taken drastic measures. Authorities have issued the highest-level red typhoon alert and raised the emergency response to the most severe level. All classes and construction have been suspended, and shopping centers, restaurants, and supermarkets have been ordered to close. Vessels have also been instructed to cease operations in Sanya's waters.

The Meteorological Center has forecast heavy rainfall and strong winds across Hainan and the nearby Guangdong province and Guangxi region. Some areas in Hainan are expected to receive up to 400 mm of precipitation. Officials have stressed the need for heightened vigilance to ensure no fatalities and minimal injuries as the city prepares for the worst-case scenarios.

Sanya, one of China's most popular holiday destinations, attracted 34 million tourist visits in 2024. The lifting of the current restrictions will depend on the storm's impact, which could have significant consequences for the local economy and the lives of residents and visitors.
