Summary
- Salem sets new high temperature record of 101°F on August 22
- Extreme heat warning issued until August 26, with temps in low 100s
- Power companies ask customers to reduce electricity use during heatwave

As of August 23, 2025, Salem, Oregon is in the midst of a record-breaking heatwave. On August 22, the city reached a scorching high of 101°F, surpassing the previous record of 100°F set in 1942.
The extreme heat is expected to continue through August 26, with forecasts calling for temperatures to remain in the low 100s and upper 90s. In response, the National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning advisory for Salem, advising residents to take precautions against the dangerously high temperatures.
To help alleviate the strain on the electrical grid during the heatwave, local power companies like Pacific Power are asking customers to reduce their electricity usage. Customers are being asked to limit the use of appliances that generate heat, such as dishwashers, ovens, and clothes dryers, until the evening or early morning hours. They are also encouraged to turn off lights, computers, and televisions, and use fans to keep air circulating.
Additionally, a new state rule adopted for 2025 has placed a moratorium on power shut-offs due to unpaid bills during extreme heat warnings. Customers who had their utilities disconnected after August 19 can now call to have their power restored without upfront costs.
