Townships Scramble as Road Salt Deliveries Vanish
15 Jan
Summary
- Municipalities face a critical shortage of road salt deliveries.
- Scott Township ordered 500 tons but received none, leaving little stock.
- Supply chain issues, including barge transport, are blamed for the delays.

Municipalities across the region are facing a severe winter challenge due to a lack of essential road salt deliveries. Scott Township officials reported that two planned salt deliveries never arrived, leaving them with a critically low supply of between 75 to 100 tons, significantly less than the 500 tons they ordered. This scarcity forces difficult decisions about where to apply the limited salt, prioritizing safety on main roads and treacherous spots like hills.
The shortage is primarily blamed on the distributor, which is experiencing delivery problems. According to Scott Township Director of Public Services Tom Kelley, a reliance on barge transport for salt supplies has led to insufficient replenishment. Reserves have been depleted at the unloading point in Clairton, impacting numerous municipalities in Allegheny County. Residents have noticed the reduced salting efforts, leading to inconveniences like canceled activities and difficulties accessing essential services.
In response to the tight supply, Scott Township is implementing a strategy focused on safety, directing crews to prioritize seven designated snow routes and known hazardous locations. This includes treating hills and icy patches. While recent weather hasn't been severe, officials are hopeful for relief, with a partial shipment of approximately 62 tons anticipated soon. This situation highlights the vulnerability of municipal winter maintenance to supply chain disruptions.
