13 Jul
Summary
- Temperatures are expected to reach 97 degrees this week.
- Heat indices could reach 103 degrees in some areas.
- This is the second heat wave projected for the summer.

Southern New England, including Rhode Island, is preparing for a significant heat wave, marking the second such event of the summer. Beginning Tuesday, July 14, 2026, and extending through Thursday, July 16, temperatures are projected to reach extreme levels. Daily highs are forecasted at 94 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, a searing 97 degrees on Wednesday, and 92 degrees on Thursday.
A heat advisory has been issued for much of Southern New England, valid from Tuesday through Wednesday. During this period, heat indices are anticipated to climb between 100 and 103 degrees Fahrenheit in some locales. The National Weather Service emphasizes that while this heat wave may not be as intense as the previous one, the high temperatures still present considerable risks for individuals engaged in outdoor work or recreational activities.
The region experienced its first heat wave earlier this month, with Providence recording highs of 90, 99, 98, and 95 degrees Fahrenheit from July 1 to July 4. Even in June, the area narrowly missed a heat wave, with temperatures peaking at 95 degrees on June 11 and 93 on June 12, just shy of the three consecutive 90-degree days defining a heat wave. Following the upcoming heat wave, weather patterns suggest continued warmth, with highs predicted around 89 degrees on Friday, July 17, and 87 degrees over the subsequent weekend.
