A powerful and exceptionally rare tornado struck a mountainside near Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday afternoon. This unusual weather event prompted a tornado warning from the National Weather Service at 2:15 p.m. local time.
Radar signatures suggested the tornado was strong, potentially equivalent to an EF2 or EF3, with debris observed being lofted as high as 4,000 feet into the air. The storm originated near Kaysville, Utah, approximately 20 miles north of Salt Lake City.
Fortunately, the tornado's path appears to have been limited to the remote mountainside. As a result, no significant urban damage has been reported. This event represents the third tornado recorded in Utah this year.
