31 Oct
Summary
- Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes, devastates Caribbean
- Remnants of Melissa expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to UK this weekend
- Unsettled weather forecast for Halloween, with potential for showers and gusty conditions

On 2025-10-31T18:28:19+00:00, the UK is bracing for the potential impact of the powerful Hurricane Melissa, which has been wreaking havoc across the Caribbean in the past few days.
Melissa, one of the most powerful landfalling Atlantic hurricanes on record, has left a trail of destruction in its wake, with sustained wind speeds of 90mph. The storm has already claimed at least 19 lives in Jamaica and 30 in Haiti, as aid supplies begin to arrive in the affected areas.
Now, the Met Office has warned that the remnants of Melissa could well arrive on UK shores, bringing a spell of unsettled weather. According to Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tom Crabtree, a low-pressure system containing the remnants of Melissa is expected to move across the far northwest of the UK late on Sunday and into early Monday.
This system is likely to introduce some milder air and bring further spells of rain, which will be heaviest over western hills. The forecaster has also warned that the weather is expected to be unsettled across much of the UK on Friday, with heavy, blustery showers likely for many parts, potentially disrupting Halloween plans for families.
The unsettled conditions are expected to continue through the weekend, with further areas or bands of rain or showers, some heavy, likely to run east or northeast across many areas. Windy conditions, with the potential for coastal gales, are also anticipated.
