As of September 27, 2025, dangerous tropical weather is brewing in the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Humberto has intensified into a powerful Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. The storm is currently located about 375 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands and is moving west at 6 mph.
Humberto is expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents for the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda over the weekend. Forecasters warn that the storm could pose a significant threat to these areas.
Separately, a weather system is threatening parts of the Bahamas and Cuba with heavy rainfall and flash flooding. This system is on track to approach the Southeast US early next week and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by late Monday. In response, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency, allowing state officials to coordinate with local and federal governments and ensure residents are eligible for federal aid.
The tropical disturbance has already caused heavy rains and flooding in the Dominican Republic, leading authorities to evacuate hundreds of people and declare a red alert in five provinces. Flooding of rivers, streams, and ravines has left dozens of communities cut off by landslides and fallen bridges, including one that collapsed while a truck was crossing, killing the driver.
