Flash Flooding Threatens Pittsburgh Area
27 May
Summary
- Flood watches are active for parts of the Pittsburgh area.
- Saturated soils and training storms increase flash flood risk.
- Dry weather with cooler temperatures expected after today.

Parts of the Pittsburgh area are currently under a Flood Watch. This alert is in effect due to saturated soils combined with training storms, significantly raising the likelihood of flash flooding throughout the day. Communities south of Interstate 70 are especially at risk, with some areas like Morgantown, West Virginia, having already received over 2.25 inches of rain in the past nine days.
While scattered rain chances will persist through the morning and into the afternoon for areas south of I-70, most locations north of the highway are expected to be dry this afternoon. Flash flooding, which can occur rapidly, poses a deadly risk, and residents are advised to avoid flood-prone areas and flooded roads if possible.
Following today's wet conditions, the outlook for the upcoming days is dry. A "blocking high" pressure system is anticipated to keep rain at bay and skies clear through at least Sunday. Temperatures will be mild, with highs reaching only the mid-to-upper 70s, which may not be warm enough for typical pool weather. By Sunday, this high-pressure ridge is expected to break down, potentially allowing rain chances to return to the forecast.
