Pittsburgh Air Alert: Fine Particles Pose Health Risk
20 Oct
Summary
- Air quality alert in effect for Allegheny County.
- Fine PM2.5 particles are the main concern, N95 masks recommended.
- Pleasant weather continues with highs in the upper 60s.
An air quality alert is in effect for parts of the Pittsburgh area, specifically targeting Allegheny County today. Atmospheric conditions under high pressure are trapping fine particles, particularly PM2.5, close to the surface. These emissions, usually diluted by wind, are now concentrated, posing a risk to respiratory health. N95 respirators are advised over surgical masks for protection against these fine particles.
The Mon Valley region in southern Allegheny County is typically most affected by poor air quality. These conditions are expected to persist through at least Thursday morning and potentially the weekend, with the worst impacts occurring during the hours immediately following sunrise.
Meanwhile, high pressure is also delivering a stretch of pleasant weather. High temperatures are predicted to reach the upper 60s, with sunny skies and light winds. Patchy fog may occur, especially north of I-80, and further fog advisories could be issued for Wednesday and Thursday mornings as dew points tick up slightly. The weekend forecast remains pleasant with highs in the mid-60s to near 70.
