Phoenix Heat Shatters Records: Record Highs and Warmest Nights

Phoenix has been enveloped in extreme heat, with Friday, July 24, witnessing record-breaking temperatures. The daytime high soared to 117 degrees, surpassing the previous daily record of 116 degrees set in 2023. Earlier that day, the overnight low only dipped to 97 degrees, matching the warmest low ever recorded, which also occurred in 2023.

The heat is fueled by a stubborn area of high pressure over Arizona. This phenomenon suppresses thunderstorm activity and contributes to the unusually warm nighttime temperatures. The urban heat island effect, where city materials like concrete and glass retain heat, further exacerbates the problem by preventing the air from cooling down sufficiently overnight.

Extreme heat warnings are currently active for metro Phoenix and southwestern Arizona and are expected to continue through Monday evening. While this intense heat pattern is predicted to be short-lived, with high pressure expected to shift, residents should remain vigilant. Isolated storm activity may increase in southeastern Arizona by Saturday.

Looking ahead, storm chances are projected to grow by Sunday and into the early days of the following week. However, temperatures in the 100s are anticipated to return the subsequent weekend, marking the start of August. Despite the impending slight shift in weather patterns, residents are advised to prepare for continued high temperatures.
