The districts of Ganjam and Gajapati in Odisha are facing a significant risk of flash floods following heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Arnab. The cyclone made landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, bringing substantial downpours to these Odisha districts.
Mahendragiri in Gajapati recorded the highest rainfall of 249.9 mm in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 AM. Other areas in Gajapati, including Mohana and Paralakhemundi, also experienced very heavy rainfall. Ganjam district saw similar intense showers, with Ganjam block and Chhatrapur receiving over 160 mm and 150 mm respectively.
Engineers have indicated that the water levels in major rivers and reservoirs are likely to rise due to the persistent rain in catchment areas. Water from the Baghalati reservoir has already been discharged due to overflow. Ganjam collector Keerthi Vasan V stated that field engineers and administrative officers are diligently monitoring water storage and discharge levels across all key dams and reservoirs, emphasizing that there is no cause for alarm as the administration is prepared.
