This surge in aurora activity is attributed to the longer nights as the UK approaches the Autumn equinox.
Further contributing to the enhanced viewing potential are disturbances on the sun, specifically sunspots directed towards Earth. These solar events release energy that interacts with our atmosphere, producing the aurora's colors. The Russell-McPherron effect, which peaks around the equinoxes due to Earth's orientation towards the sun, also plays a significant role.
Prime conditions for aurora spotting require dark, clear skies, free from light pollution and cloud cover. Remote areas, particularly those facing north like coastal spots and rural locations, offer the best vantage points. While September and October are generally favorable for aurora sightings, strong solar activity can lead to unexpected displays at other times.
