The northeastern region of India is currently enduring a sweltering summer, with temperatures consistently exceeding normal levels and causing discomfort.
Across Assam, maximum temperatures surpassed 35°C on Saturday, with several locations registering readings 4-5°C higher than the typical seasonal average. Silchar emerged as the hottest city, hitting 38.6°C, while Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh saw the most significant deviation, soaring 6.7°C above normal.
Medical experts have alerted the public to the health dangers associated with the intense heat, including heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration. Dr. Devajit Choudhury highlighted potential skin issues like sunburn and excessive sweating, as well as viral infections. He also cautioned about water-borne diseases such as diarrhea and hepatitis due to potential waterlogging from rains.
While the plains of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura are experiencing extreme heat, the hill states of Nagaland and Meghalaya have reported comparatively cooler conditions, with maximum temperatures generally below 30°C. However, even these areas have noted substantial departures from their usual averages.
Residents in Guwahati are struggling with the oppressive heat, with the heat index reportedly crossing 40°C. Many are limiting outdoor activities until rain provides some relief. The Regional Meteorological Centre forecasts moderate rainfall in several parts of Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura for Sunday, with light to moderate showers expected in other northeastern states. Despite this, maximum temperatures are predicted to rise by another 2°C to 4°C in the coming days.
