NJ Braces for Blizzard: Travel Ban, Flight Cancellations
26 Jan
Summary
- North NJ expects up to 18 inches of snow from the winter storm.
- Travel bans and flight cancellations are in effect across the state.
- Dangerously cold temperatures with sub-zero wind chills will persist.

New Jersey is grappling with a significant winter storm that began Sunday, with forecasts indicating heavy snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain. Northern parts of the state, north of I-80, are expected to receive 12 to 18 inches of snow, while southeastern counties anticipate 6 to 8 inches, accompanied by potential ice accumulations. Travel is severely impacted, with Governor Mikie Sherrill declaring a state of emergency for all 21 counties. A commercial vehicle travel ban and speed restrictions are active on major highways. NJ Transit has suspended bus and light rail services, and train service was scheduled to cease by early afternoon Sunday. Newark Liberty International Airport has canceled over 1,100 flights for Sunday and Monday.
Following the storm, New Jersey is bracing for a prolonged period of dangerously cold temperatures, with wind chills expected to drop between -10 and 0 degrees Fahrenheit through the week. High temperatures from Monday through Wednesday are predicted to remain below 20 degrees, with lows in the single digits. This extreme cold increases the risk of hypothermia and frostbite. While the week is expected to be dry, the accumulated snow will not melt quickly due to the bitter cold. A slight chance of additional snow exists on Thursday.
