Newfoundland Braces for Blizzard: 50cm Snow, 100km/h Winds
2 Feb
Summary
- Up to 50 cm of snow is expected in parts of eastern Newfoundland.
- Winds could reach 100 km/h, significantly reducing visibility.
- Coastal flooding warnings are also in effect for affected areas.
A major winter storm is forecast to impact eastern Newfoundland, beginning Sunday night and lasting through early Tuesday. Environment Canada has issued winter storm warnings for the Avalon and Burin peninsulas, Clarenville, and central regions.
Residents can expect heavy snowfall, with accumulations potentially reaching 50 cm in some areas. Wind gusts are predicted to be as high as 100 km/h, causing visibility to drop to near zero. The snow is expected to become wet and dense as temperatures rise on Monday.
Coastal flooding is also a concern, with corresponding warnings in place. Less severe conditions are anticipated in other parts of central Newfoundland, where up to 30 cm of snow is forecast. Some southern Avalon areas may experience a mix of snow, rain, or ice pellets before reverting to snow. Non-essential travel and outdoor activities are strongly discouraged.
