Forecasters Track Potential New Tropical Storm in Atlantic

As of October 12, 2025, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has begun monitoring a new potential tropical system in the Atlantic Ocean. The system, a tropical wave located several hundred miles south-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Forecasters believe environmental conditions are favorable for the system to develop into a tropical depression in the coming week as it moves west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Jerry, which had been impacting the Caribbean's northern Leeward Islands, has now dissipated into remnants in the open Atlantic. The remnants, located about 330 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, are expected to continue producing gale-force winds and swells that could affect several islands in the region over the next couple of days.

If the new potential system were to strengthen, it could become Tropical Storm Lorenzo. The NHC currently gives it a 40% chance of developing in the next seven days. This comes as the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has already seen 11 named storms, with four becoming hurricanes and three of those turning into major hurricanes.
