Mumbai Braces for Heavy Rains: Orange Alert Issued

Mumbai is currently on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. This renewed monsoon activity brings concerns of localised waterlogging and potential flash floods in the city's low-lying areas.

The alert follows moderate showers that returned to various parts of Mumbai on Monday, July 20. Neighbouring Thane and Raigad are also under the orange alert, while Palghar and Ratnagiri are under a yellow alert. Municipal authorities have advised residents to be cautious.

Mumbai's urban infrastructure, particularly its drainage systems, makes certain areas vulnerable during intense downpours. Civic bodies have deployed disaster management teams to manage potential flooding and clear blocked drains. Commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly and avoid water-prone roads.

Citizens in coastal, riverine, or hilly areas are urged to remain vigilant. Fishermen and small vessel operators have been strongly discouraged from sailing due to rough seas and squally weather conditions off the Maharashtra coast.
